Lord of Mysteries Has a Pay-to-Win Argument, and the Auction House Is at the Center of It
Chinese launch players are split over combat power, time gates and six-figure auction bids. Here is what the debate means for English players.
Four days after its China launch, Lord of Mysteries has found the argument every large MMO eventually meets: what, exactly, counts as paying for power?
The loudest version of that argument is now sitting in the game’s auction house. A Chinese player posting as 粉丝海洋 shared a launch screenshot of equipment chests listed for six-figure bids. Three 织萤游丝匣 chests show prices of 960,000. Several 灰雾晶砾匣 chests sit at 100,000. Other equipment lots are listed at 150,000. The buyout total visible at the bottom reaches 4.48 million.
The screenshot documents auction prices, not a direct cash purchase. It also shows why some launch players care more about the result than the route. Gear enters a guild auction, affluent bidders can set the pace, and combat strength is spread across several systems that the game explains poorly. Large bids during the first week have moved the discussion from cash-shop stock to the players who can keep up with the economy around it.

A launch guild auction shows three chests at 960,000, plus equipment lots from 100,000 to 150,000. Screenshot by 粉丝海洋 on TapTap.
What the screenshot shows
The page is an in-game auction interface, not a cash shop. 拍卖 means auction. 流拍 marks a lot that passed without a sale. 最高出价 is the highest bid, 我的出价 is my bid, and 一口价 is the buyout price.
The selected chest has a highest bid of 960,000. The lower right corner shows a buyout price of 4.48 million for the current lot. The photographed monitor also shows the game’s normal commerce tabs along the bottom, including 商城 for shop, 百货 for general goods, 交易所 for exchange and 充值 for top-up.
Chinese forum posts often collapse several types of spending into one angry phrase. A direct store purchase, an auction bid, a monthly card and a time-limited discount are different systems. Each can speed up access to combat-related gear or materials.
The player who posted the screenshot described ordinary guilds failing to sell many lots while high bids appeared on the valuable chests. They also said the formula behind 战力, combat power, was not clear enough to explain the growing gap. That is one player’s account, not a full economy audit. The image supports the price claim, while the wider reviews show that the confusion is not isolated.
Combat power is spread across too many menus
One detailed TapTap review, posted after 13.2 hours of play, breaks 战力 into character level, Sequence level, skills, equipment, marionettes, Sealed Artifacts and Connections. The reviewer says daily gates restrict both ordinary levels and potion digestion, while equipment comes mainly from multiplayer instances. Their complaint is less about one overpowered store item and more about the number of places a gap can form.
The launch client uses 非凡评分, Beyonder Rating, as its visible shorthand for character strength. Reviews describe PvP outcomes as heavily tied to this rating. At the same time, players disagree over how much money can move it.
陈某人, who logged more than 34 hours and spent over 130 yuan, wrote that the store mainly sells outfits and vehicles. In their view, direct combat power is not the main product. The same review notes a costly flying dragon for high spenders but says ordinary players do not need it. It also reports that the auction system failed during launch and that the compensation was 1,000 bound gold pounds.
Another three-day review says the gap between heavy spenders and free players was not yet severe. Its bigger warning concerns time. Daily limited events open through the afternoon, and missing routine tasks can leave a character behind. A reply under that review argues that later material rerolls may still favor large spenders.
Current reviews support both readings. Some players see a cosmetic-led store attached to a game that can be played without buying strength. Others see a traditional MMO economy where money, guild access and time convert into better rolls, better lots and faster progress, even if the checkout page never labels the purchase as combat power.
The useful translation panel
English players trying the Chinese client will see the argument before they can read it. These are the labels that matter when checking a lot or comparing strength:
| Chinese label | English meaning | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 拍卖 | Auction | Bidding screen for player or guild lots |
| 流拍 | Unsold | The lot ended without a winning sale |
| 竞价要求 | Bid requirement | Conditions that control who can bid |
| 最高出价 | Highest bid | Current leading bid |
| 我的出价 | My bid | The amount you entered |
| 一口价 | Buyout price | Price to purchase the lot at once |
| 商城 | Shop | Main store tab |
| 交易所 | Exchange | Player market or exchange tab |
| 充值 | Top-up | Purchase premium currency |
| 战力 | Combat power | General strength score |
| 非凡评分 | Beyonder Rating | The game’s displayed combat rating |
| 非凡物质 | Beyonder Material | Attribute material used in progression |
| 封印物 | Sealed Artifact | A separate combat and build system |
| 人脉 | Connections | Character relationship bonuses |
Do not treat a large auction number as a yuan price. The screenshot shows in-game bid values without a direct conversion to real money. A scarce progression chest in a competitive auction goes to a player with enough currency who also meets that server’s bidding rules.
The rating is high, but the reviews are not calm
TapTap listed Lord of Mysteries at 8.1 on August 25, with 31,379 reviews. It was also number one on the platform’s popular download chart, with 1.82 million downloads and 2.84 million followers shown on the game page.
The review tags explain why one number cannot capture this launch. Players had marked 有趣好玩, fun to play, 6,366 times and 画面优秀, excellent visuals, 3,086 times. The largest criticism tag was 运行稳定性, runtime stability, at 1,471. 玩法设计, gameplay design, had 605 critical tags. 氪金付费, paid monetization, had 139.
That distribution suggests the payment argument is visible but not the only launch issue. Reviews praise the Western European city scenes, lighting, voice work and some character stories. They criticize mobile optimization, crowded UI, unclear progression, story changes and familiar MMO combat. Some fans expected the Pathways to determine unusual combat solutions. They instead found standard group roles, power scores and scheduled PvP.
NGA discussion follows the same fault line. Players compare the game with other large Chinese MMOs and ask whether a heavy daily schedule can hold an audience that wants shorter sessions. That concern can hurt free players as much as a cash shop. If progress expects several timed activities each day, the cheapest way to stay competitive is still expensive in hours.
What free players should do in the first week
The launch evidence is too early for a final pay-to-win verdict. Seasonal limits, new crafting systems and later auction supply can change the size of the gap. A first-week guild market is also vulnerable to scarcity. The first useful chest on a new server will cost more than the same chest after supply grows.
For now, English players should separate three questions:
- Does the direct store sell combat stats?
- Can paid currency or paid convenience become auction power?
- Can a free player finish current PvE and participate in PvP without treating every timed activity as an appointment?
The first question has a mixed but mostly reassuring answer from current reviews. The second is what the auction screenshot has put under pressure. The third will take more than four days to judge.
If you play without spending, do not chase an opening-week auction because the price looks like the server standard. Compare the lot with craftable and instance rewards. Check whether your next Sequence gate is time-locked before buying a small rating increase. Join a guild that explains its auction distribution, because 竞价要求 can include guild participation conditions. Record your 非凡评分 before and after each upgrade. The client does a poor job of showing which system produced the gain.
The server expansions and TapTap download rank show that players wanted to enter this world. The auction economy will decide how useful free players feel when the first-week supply shortage ends.
